The Newton Auxiliary Police conducts ongoing recruitment for new members.

The Auxiliary Police are made up of residents from Massachusetts who:

  • Patrol in marked police vehicles (observe/ report/assist)
  • Help keep our community a safer place to live (#1 Safest City in America '04/'05)
  • Help prevent criminal activity by being extra eyes and ears of the Police Department
  • Direct traffic at parades, road races, walkathons and countless other special events
  • Serve during disasters and other emergencies by assisting the regular Police Department
The Auxiliary Police was established pursuant to provisions of the Civil Defense act of 1950 and is composed of civic-minded residents of the community who work together to improve the level of safety and security in their community.

The presence of the  Auxiliary Police, in uniform, on patrol in marked police units has been proven to reduce vandalism and other crimes within the community. The Auxiliary Police are a constant and welcome sight to both the citizens and the adjunct law enforcement personnel.

All Auxiliary Police Officers have mandated training provided by the Newton Police Department and they serve in a strictly voluntary (unpaid) capacity. Their service is provided free to the City.  The Auxiliary Police is an integral part of our community.

  • Applied patrol procedures
  • Anti-Terrorism training
  • Incident Command
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness
  • Blood-Borne Pathogens
  • Traffic and Pedestrian Control
  • Response to Critical Incidents

Applicant Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must be a Massachusetts State resident
  • Must possess a valid MA State driver's license
  • Must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be of good moral character without a felony conviction.
    (A misdemeanor conviction may also prevent acceptance.)
  • Must consent to a detailed background investigation
  • Must be willing to submit to a drug test and a psychological exam
