Newton Police Department Tip Line
The Newton Police Department maintains a telephone line where callers who wish to remain anonymous can leave information regarding drug or criminal activity. Persons wanting to report such activity should call the Tip Line at 617-796-2121.
The tip line rings directly into a voice mailbox where messages can be left. The information will be reviewed by a Detective Bureau Supervisor to determine what action should be taken.
Information concerning criminal activity will be handled by the Newton Police department or will be forwarded to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Information regarding illegal drug activity will be shared with the Newton Police Drug Unit and the Suburban Middlesex County Drug Task Force if appropriate.
Callers are encouraged to leave the identity of the suspected offenders, the identities of any of their associates, their addresses, and their vehicle descriptions. In the case of illicit drug activity, callers are asked to relay what types of drugs are involved and the locations of drug activity.
The Tip Line is voluntary and anonymous. No attempt will be made to determine the identity of the caller. Callers are encouraged to leave their name and telephone number so additional information regarding the tip can be obtained. Callers leaving their contact information will be contacted by a Detective Bureau Supervisor for follow-up. The identity of all callers will be kept strictly confidential.

The Newton Police Detective Bureau is responsible for the follow-up of all serious crimes committed in the City of Newton. Detectives also investigate missing persons, domestic violence incidents and elder affairs cases.
The registration and auditing of sex offenders living and/or working in Newton is handled by the Detective Bureau, as well as the dissemination of sex offender information to the public.
The police prosecutor, assigned to the Detective Bureau, is responsible for coordinating with the courts in the prosecution of all criminal cases initiated by the Newton Police Department.
Officers selected to work in the Detective Bureau receive specialized training in the following disciplines: crime scene investigation and the collection of evidence, interviewing and interrogation techniques, arson investigations, domestic violence investigations, elder issues, computer crimes, drug investigations, sexual assaults, and homicide investigations.
