The mission of NMART is to provide a timely and effective response in the coordination of the public, private, and human resources needed for the rescue, recovery, sheltering, and care of animals during federal, state, and local emergencies and to carry out the operation of Newton’s six animal emergency facilities.

Goals:
1) To provide shelter and veterinary care for injured and displaced animals.
2) To provide search and rescue services for injured and displaced animals.
3) To educate the community of Newton on how to prepare for their pets in a disaster.
4) Minimize the threats to the health and safety of animals and humans in the city of Newton.
5) Minimize the economic impact of animal emergencies in the city of Newton.
6) Decrease the spread of disease to animals and humans during any emergencies in the city of Newton.
7) Understand the interface between animal and human health in the city of Newton.

Objectives:
1) Establish Incident Command structure for NMART
2) Establish committees to address NMART issues
3) Develop an Operations Manual to address NMART functions
4) Establish teams of trained personnel who can respond to emergency situations
5) Establish relationships with local veterinarians to provide veterinary care for animals injured during a disaster
6) Develop and maintain a NMART website
7) Provide public education materials to the community of Newton
8) Apply for grants that will allow for the purchasing and stocking of supplies for Newton’s six animal emergency shelters
